Caring For Your Smile After Invisalign

GettyImages-532122334Once you finish treatment with Invisalign, we know you'll be excited – after all, you've done the work to achieve a beautiful new smile! But be careful, because you're not quite out of the woods yet. After the active phase of your treatment comes the retention phase, and this is critical to maintaining your brand new smile. Without retention and conscientious post-treatment care, your teeth will just move back to their old positions, erasing all your hard work!

At Niagara Orthodontics, each of our offices in Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Fonthill and Beamsville will provide you with the steps for protecting your smile after Invisalign treatment. For your convenience, we’ve also provided the most important post-Invisalign care tips below.

Wear Your Retainers

After treatment, you'll need to wear a retainer. Your retainer will help keep your teeth in place as they adjust and solidify in their new positions – but lucky for you, you can probably just use your last set of aligners as retainers! We'll give you detailed instructions on wearing and caring for your retainers are your final orthodontic appointment with us.

Oral Hygiene

Now that you've got a new smile, you'll have to be diligent about keeping it clean and healthy. This means you'll need to keep up a regular, diligent oral hygiene regimen. This time, however, it'll be a little easier – instead of brushing four times per day, you'll only have to brush twice a day and floss once per day. Being diligent with oral hygiene is critical for the long-term health of your teeth. You may experience some soreness or tenderness in your teeth at first, but don't worry – this is normal, and it's just a byproduct of your teeth adjusting to their new positions.

Regular Dental Checkups

In addition to your own care, you'll have to have regular check up appointments with your dentist to ensure everything is going smoothly. Most patients need to have a checkup and cleaning exam at least twice a year, but you should talk to your dentist about the ideal frequency for your unique case.
