Your Orthodontic Treatment
PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION
This initial consultation will include a visual clinical examination and frank discussion of all the orthodontic problems that exist. The doctor will also give you an explanation of the treatment and time necessary to correct these problems, as well as what to expect in terms of cost. If treatment is to proceed, further diagnostic records including photographs and study models will be taken at a records appointment. If necessary, a second consultation appointment may be arranged.
DIAGNOSTIC RECORDS
If treatment in required, the doctor will advise you that records are needed next in order to further diagnose the problems in order to present the best treatment options to you. Full orthodontic records usually include upper and lower impressions (molds) for study models, one jaw x-ray (Panorex) and one head x-ray (Cephalogram), and facial and oral photographs.
CONSULTATION
A number of weeks (1-3) after collecting the diagnostic records, a consultation will be arranged where the doctor will discuss the specific problems and treatment options with you.
APPOINTMENTS
We attempt to make appointments as convenient as possible for patients, parents and teachers. However, due to the majority of our patients being of school age, appointments out of school times are reserved for adjustment appointments. It takes co-operation from all of us to ensure that everyone benefits from this arrangement. Routine adjustment appointments are usually scheduled 4-6 weeks apart. However, there are some procedures that may require more frequent visits to monitor treatment progress.
YOUR FAMILY DENTIST
Teeth must be professionally cleaned and all cavities resorted before any orthodontic treatment can begin. We recommend that you continue to be seen every 3-6 months by your family dentist for cleaning and cavity checks after the braces are placed. The fees for any cleanings, fillings, or x-rays are not covered in your orthodontic fee.
INSURANCE FOR ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT
We will gladly complete information relative to your orthodontic treatment on insurance forms. However, we honour assignments that do not involve a participation clause, that is, your insurance cheque will go to you and not our office. Each patient with coverage will be supplied with an insurance form for each appointment where a charge is applicable. Patients complete the personal information, sign, and forward to their insurance companies.
