Is It Better To Floss First Or Brush First?

As a leading orthodontist in Niagara Falls, Beamsville, Fonthill, St. Catharines, Pelham and the surrounding areas, Dr. Neeraj Pershad is frequently asked by patients whether it’s better to start by brush first or floss first. Patients are constantly curious about this, and it’s easy to see why--both theories have sound explanations and a lot of proponents in both the professional community and the general public. We’ll cover both sides to get a better understanding of each.

The Theory Behind Flossing First

Brushing first is usually the most common method people talk about, but the flossing first proponents have good reasons for their side of the theory, too. They say it doesn’t make sense to free up food debris from between the teeth just to spread it around a clean mouth. Flossing first means cleaning up all that free debris. It also means the fluoride from the toothpaste has a better contact surface between the teeth. Both of those things are supposed to make it better.

The Theory Behind Brushing First

While most people brush first out of reflex, the people who do so because they believe it’s a superior method have a few good reasons themselves. If you take off the majority of the plaque, the flossing only needs to free what brushing cannot reach, and the action of the floss forces the remainder of the fluoride into the between-teeth spaces.

The Recommendation From Your Niagara Falls Orthodontist Is….

We’re really just happy you are doing both! The fact is, brushing and flossing together is known to be the solution for healthier teeth and a longer life expectancy because of it. Whichever way suits you is fine, just keep making sure you brush and floss together. If you really want to make sure you get the possible benefits of each theory, you could always alternate the order, doing it one way in the morning and the other at night.
